CAP Stands with Members as Leaders in Care

Working together throughout 2022, the CAP and its members stood together to address the issues of our time as leaders in health care and our communities.

The CAP worked diligently with members through laboratory quality solutions, advocacy at the federal and state level, and improved member resources to help pathologists provide the best care for their patients. And while COVID-19 remained a top concern and focus, pathologists and the CAP addressed new outbreaks like monkeypox, responded to staff and supply shortages, grappled with serious societal issues, and much more in another critical year.

Through laboratory accreditation, proficiency testing (PT), cancer guidelines, and more, the CAP expanded laboratory quality worldwide to ensure the safety of patients everywhere. New PT specifically for SARS-CoV-2 kept testing accurate and reliable as the pandemic continued into its third year, and we simplified our accreditation checklists to help keep laboratories nimble in times of stress. The Leading Laboratory Quality section of this report outlines all the new programs and resources for customers in 2022.

Working with state pathology societies and members across the US, the CAP continued to advocate for a regulatory framework for laboratory-developed tests that addresses both patient safety and quality while minimizing the burden on laboratories. CAP Advocacy led a multitude of legislative and regulatory successes on behalf of the specialty in 2022. Read more about them in the Influencing Public Policy section of this report.

The CAP and its members rose to the challenge of tumultuous times in other ways, working to address systemic racism and health inequity. We firstly had to recognize the deep-rooted issues driving inequality and racism in our health care systems and the US at large. Now, with the help and insights of our diverse membership and the new CAP Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Committee, we continue our long journey of listening, learning, and changing.

In the Investing in Our Members section of the report, you can learn much more about the new resources and education the CAP offered members, and how member councils and committees developed strategies to support the specialty.

In the 2022 CAP Annual Report, we recount and detail the efforts and achievements from the past year. We welcome you to read our recent history, thank you for making the CAP your trusted professional home, and encourage you to be an active member in writing our future.
